Located on the southern bank of the Yangtze River, Zhenjiang is a major port city in Jiangsu province. It is at the intersection of the Yangtze River and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the major transportation route in China for thousands of years. In 2008, the port handled over 100,000,000 tons of cargo goods. Express railway connects the city to Nanjing in the west and Shanghai in the east. It’s is 2 hours away from Shanghai, Chinese financial capital. The city is part of Yangtze River triangle economic development zone, the fastest growing zone in China.

Zhenjiang is also a top tourist destination, a famous historical and cultural city. The city symbol Jin Hill, or Golden Hill, is known as the jade island in the Yangtze River. The hilltop has an ancient tower. And the well-known Gold Hill Temple is at the foot of the hill, the location of Chinese love story Madame White Snake, in which a magical and 1000-year-old snake took the form of a beautiful lady and escaped through a cave in Gold Hill, to be reunited with her lover in the far-away city of Hangzhou, another scenic city near Shanghai. The cave is now a preserved attraction.

Zhenjiang has strong connection with the US. It is the town where Nobel laureate Pearl S. Buck spent 18 years, including her childhood. Her father was a Southern Presbyterian missionary and the family was sent to Zhenjiang to preach in 1892 when Pearl was 3 months old. She was raised in Zhenjiang. Her mother died and was buried there. Pearl S. Buck loved the city and thought of Zhenjiang as her native place all her life. In 2008, to mark the 70th anniversary of Buck’s winning of the Nobel Prize, Zhenjiang Municipal Government sponsored the International Symposium of Pearl S. Buck. A delegation of over 100 people from Pennsylvania attended the conference.

Zhenjiang is one of the 13 cities directly under Jiangsu Province and has 3 county-level cities and 3 districts. It covers 1500 square mile and has population of 3 million, with 1 million urban residents. Zhenjiang has become a new and developing city with a combination of port, industry, commerce & trade and tourism among the river economic belt of the Yangtze River Delta.
